SCRATCHING THE SURFACE
My birth name is Bryan Miraben. I'm a 43 year old kid outta Jersey, but I've called Miami my home for over 20 years. My stage name, Leyva, is my mother's maiden name. Am I a momma's boy? Till the day I die. She's the most important woman in my life. I owe her so much. So I feel that the best way to repay her, is to have all of my successes carry her name. That's not to say that my pops is chopped liver. He, as a matter of fact, is a huge reason I'm doing this thing. Just to put it into perspective, he was a janitor when I was born. I saw that man go through ten years of night school to earn a masters degree, get a great job, earn way more money, only to then drive the shitty car so that my mom could have the nicer one. He is my hero. Anyway, enough of that sentimental stuff. I'm making myself cry over here.
They say you shouldn't name drop or fluff up your DJ bio with a bunch of cliches and embellished stories... I can't say I disagree... However!!! I'm kinda really really really proud of what I've been able to accomplish in a relatively short period of time. So... with that being said, I may drop a name or twenty. I may also brag about how I landed my first residency, after my first show, which was my first attempt ever playing in front of an actual crowd of people that weren't my friends, family and the occasional stuff animals propped up on my living room couch. Please understand, I'm not gloating... okay, maybe a little, but more than anything I'm just really excited for what my future holds.
"You were born for this shit, pa."
Those were the exact and only words my mom had for me after she saw me perform for the first time. I knew at that very moment, that my decision to chase this dream, to put it all on the line, to deal with the successes and rejections, to take the risks involved with pursuing a career in music, was the right move. That was nine years ago.
You may be asking yourself, "Self, this is cool and all but what's he up to now? Where did he come from? What has he accomplished? This guy's 43? No way! I figured him to be in early 30's! What's his secret?"
The suspense must be driving you mad.
Rest easy.
